Nominate Minnesota History Projects

As you reflect on the end of 2022, look back and consider what great history projects you and your colleagues have accomplished. Consider nominating notable history work for either a Minnesota History Award or an AASLH Leadership in History Award. Great work deserves recognition; recognition inspires and informs others.

Nominations Due for Minnesota History Awards and Lifetime Achievement

Start putting together your nominations for the 2022 Annual Minnesota History Awards for projects completed during 2021, or the Lifetime Achievement Award for individuals who have contributed to the state's local history field for 25 years or more.

For the Lifetime Achievement Award, nominate people who have demonstrated leadership within their organization, their community, and/or to Minnesota's history community in the preservation and promotion of local and state history. Experience should total 25 years in Minnesota.

Nominate projects accomplished from July 1, 2021, to October 1, 2022 for awards in the following categories:

  • Behind the Scenes
  • Collections
  • Civic Engagement & Public Celebrations
  • Publications
  • Interpretive Programs

Applications are due by 11:59 pm on Friday, January 15, 2023, and awardees will be honored at the 2022 Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums Annual Conference, April 25 to 27, 2023, in Austin, MN. See MALHM's Awards page for more information about all categories and definitions, as well as examples of winners from past years to inspire you.

Nominations should be complete but concise and nominators should review the Lifetime Achievement Award or Minnesota History Award Application Instructions packets. To fill in the form, use Adobe Acrobat Reader as your default PDF viewer.

The Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums created the awards in 2008 to honor the excellent work performed in Minnesota's public history community. In addition to highlighting those who have achieved excellence, the program intends to use the examples to show the rest of our peers how outstanding projects can be accomplished with the goal of raising the quality of everyone's work.

Contact the Alliance Coordinator Gibson Stanton if you have any questions.

Nominations Due for AASLH Leadership in History Awards

For 75 years, American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) bestows the Leadership in History Awards in recognition of excellence in the field of state and local history.

The Leadership in History Awards was established to encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all Americans. By publicly recognizing superior and innovative achievements, the Leadership in History Awards serves as an inspiration to others in the field.

AASLH recognizes EXCELLENCE in the following areas:

  • Exhibits
  • Public and educational programming
  • Special projects
  • Publications
  • Multimedia
  • Individual Achievement

Applicants can self-nominate or nominate another project. Nominees need not be members of AASLH to qualify. Organizations of all sizes are encouraged to apply! Awards are primarily conferred on special accomplishments occurring within the eighteen months prior to the March 1, 2023 deadline. The awards program, with the exception of the Publications category, is non-competitive.
